Modeling the Spatial Distribution of Rainfall-Induced Landslide Susceptibilities in Infanta, Quezon, Philippines
Edwin R. Abucay, Damasa B. Magcale-Macandog, Maria Victoria O. Espaldon, Florentino C. Monsalud
Abstract
The municipality of Infanta, Quezon was devastated by landslide and fl ooding caused by successive typhoons (Unding, Violeta, Winnie and super typhoon Yoyong) in 2004. These disasters caused tremendous damages to properties, infrastructure, agriculture and loss of lives in the municipality and nearby towns of Quezon Province. This study was conducted to model the spatial distribution of rainfall-induced landslide susceptibilities in Infanta, Quezon utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS).
Barangay Magsaysay (upland) of Infanta, Quezon was susceptible to landslide attributed to the geotechnical properties of the soil e.g. deep clay soil with low to moderateexpansion potential (PI = 16.53-33.04) and drastic change in land use in a span of six years (e.g. 52.27% reduction in forest cover, 97% increase in areas planted to annual crops). Furthermore, the model generated spatial LSI map shows that as rainfall approaches the threshold level of 150 mm, highly susceptible (LSI < 0.7) areas increase in area. This suggests that variability in rainfall amount such as those brought by high intense rainfall typhoon events could trigger landslide or mass movement in the study area.
Key words: landslide susceptibility index, geotechnical properties, plasticity index, geographic information system

In collaboration with Dr. Manuel Reyes of NCAT, new CMS websites will be developed. The websites include:
1. www.natuculture.org
2. http://ca-sea.conservationagricultureandagroforestry.org/
The two websites are currently a work in progress. Prof. Edwin Abucay is assisted by his brother Mr. Domingo Abucay, Jr (Information Technology student) in the further development and enhancements of the CMS website.

In his pursuit of sharing GIS knowledge to various interested individuals and stakeholders, Prof. Edwin Abucay was invited by several institutions to conduct GIS training. The trainings was designed to equip individuals with basic understanding about GIS and actual hands-on exercises using open source GIS software packages such as QGIS. Some his recently conducted trainings for 2012 include:
1. Batch 2. Intensive Training on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) in Agriculture - 18 Trainees (20 hours, 14-16 August 2012) for DA-ATI Region 4-A.
2. Batch 1. Intensive Training on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) in Agriculture - 18 Trainees (20 hours, 3-5 July 2012) for DA-ATI Region 4-A.
3. Training on the research applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) - 20 Trainees (24 hours, 6-8 June 2012) for Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU), Siniloan, Laguna.
4. Training on the research applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G). 20 Trainees. Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), Tacloban City, Leyte. 24-26 February 2012.

Prof. Edwin R. Abucay was hired as NRA consultant of CEnergy Project funded by USAID entitled "Demonstrating the Eco-town Framework in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte by the Office of the President of the Philippines, Climate Change Commission (CCC) funded by USAID thru its USAID–Philippines Climate Change and Clean Energy Project (CEnergy) - (USAID Contract No. EPP - I - 00-03-0006-000, Task #12)". Prof. Abucay was tasked to:
- Consolidate in a geodatabase the available baseline maps such as administrative boundary (municipal level), slope, elevation, soil, land cover and satellite imagery of the study area; - Identify and delineate the important natural resources in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte; - Conduct participatory resource mapping for the nine municipalities of Siargao Island; and - Integrate local knowledge and information gathered using various participatory techniques with GIS to formulate community-based and science-based Resource Map(s).
The project is expected to be completed by the end of September 2012. |

Together with Dr. Rogelio Concepcion, the team is tasked to:
- To assist in establishing Participatory GIS-assisted spatial delineation of future Climate Smart Food Zones, the locations of potential arable lands around the Laguna Lake Region, including the graduated zones of risks and opportunities associated with changing agriculture and climate changes;
- Develop GIS-assisted regional climate-safe food security data base and land use platform for up-scaling and transferring knowledge obtained from the various LakeHead researches on ecology, food and health;
- To assists locate ecologically fragile areas with potentials for Climate Smart Conservation Farming and Agro-reforestation; and
- To assists in the conduct of series of focus discussions, round table consultations, national forum - cum- peer review of outcomes and deliverables of the project
The GIS team is also composed of counterparts from RIHN. |
